The Other Side of Oblivion
Nestled among some ice-capped mountains, Fort Donner is a village protected by a log palisade overlooking a wide glacier. The exterior of the fort is marred with embedded arrowheads, claw marks, scorches and powder-burned splintering. Daylight hours consist of constant repairs and hunting for food. Night hours are spent huddled around fires and watching the treeline for any signs of attack.
The inhabitants of Fort Donner consist of fifteen native captives, mostly women and children, none of whom speak the common tongue, but they are being taught, twenty plain settlers determined to establish a home in these remote mountains, their enigmatic leader, Minister Nicolas, staring at the world from behind a black veil, he has never shown his face but holds the affection of his people. Also, manning the garrison and defending the walls is an army platoon of twenty-seven men, seven army officers. and their commanding officer, Captain Geoff Jeffrees.
